DIY Guide: How to Change Your Car’s Oil

DIY Guide: How to Change Your Car’s Oil

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Car

  • Park on a flat surface and turn off the engine. Let the car cool for about 10-15 minutes if it’s been running; warm oil drains more easily, but avoid working on a hot engine.
  • Engage the parking brake for safety.

2. Lift the Car

  • Use a car jack to lift the front end of the car and securely place jack stands underneath. Alternatively, drive your car onto ramps if you have them.
  • Ensure the car is stable and won’t roll or tilt while you’re working underneath it.

3. Locate the Oil Drain Plug

  • Underneath the engine, find the oil drain plug, which is a bolt on the oil pan (a large metal pan beneath the engine). This may vary slightly depending on your vehicle, so consult your owner’s manual if needed.

4. Drain the Old Oil

  • Place the oil catch pan directly under the drain plug to catch the old oil.
  • Use a socket wrench to carefully loosen the drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely into the pan. Be cautious of any splashes and remember that the oil may still be warm.
  • After the oil has drained, wipe the area with a rag and securely re-tighten the drain plug with the socket wrench.

5. Remove the Old Oil Filter

  • Locate the oil filter, which may be on the side or bottom of the engine. Use the oil filter wrench to remove it by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Be prepared for additional oil to leak out as you remove the filter. Let any remaining oil drain into the pan.

6. Install the New Oil Filter

  • Take the new oil filter and apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber gasket around the filter to ensure a good seal.
  • Screw the new oil filter in by hand until it is snug, and then give it an extra half-turn. Do not over-tighten.

7. Add New Oil

  • Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap (usually marked with an oil can symbol).
  • Insert the funnel and pour in the recommended amount and type of oil for your car, as specified in the owner’s manual.
  • Replace the oil filler cap once done.

8. Check the Oil Level

  • Start the engine and let it run for about a minute to circulate the new oil.
  • Turn off the engine and use the dipstick to check the oil level. Add more oil if necessary, making sure not to overfill.

9. Dispose of Old Oil Properly

  • Carefully pour the used oil from the catch pan into a sealable container and take it to a local recycling center, auto shop, or disposal site. Never dispose of oil in the trash or down a drain.
